Boiled Crab

Posted in /Cooking/Entrees/Seafood on Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Sometimes crab is on sale even out west in the prairies. Be warned that one dungeoness crab will easily feed 2 adults. So if you have leftovers as we did use them for lobster rolls or seafood bisque

Ingredients

Water
Salt
Crabs
Butter
Old Bay Seasoning

Directions

1. Keep crabs happy in heavily salted water while you boil a lot more water.

2. Place crabs in boiling water, or in a heat proof container pour boiling water over crabs. I poured the boiling water into the smaller side of my well cleaned sink
3. Keep crabs in the boiling water for 10 minutes then cover the crabs in ice.
4. Break the top of the body cavity off the boiled crabs and begin to remove the cooked flesh. Be careful there will be a lot of greenish water in the body cavity. Pour this into a bowl to dispose of later along with the stomach of the crab. Remove the white flesh for eating
5. Use seafood crackers and kitchen shears to break the legs, so you can access the meat.
6. Enjoy with melted butter and old bay seasoning

Here is a little video we made while cooking the crab. It has funny little side comments but you can see the basic technique we used.

Here is a how to video on opening the crab

FYI

  • If you happen to have larger eyes than your stomach like we do. You'll have leftover crab, probably quite a bit. You will likely only need 1/2 a large dungeoness crab per person.
  • You may like to make Crab Bisque with your leftovers.
    • If you're making bisque keep a few of the shells to add to the stock.
